Arnott’s Bluey Cheese Flavoured Snacks | Chewsday Review
They’re on our screens everyday, but should they be in our lunchbox? Arnott’s are telling us it's nothing but fun and games but we’ll see…. This week I review Arnott’s Bluey Cheese Flavoured Snacks.
Ingredients
- Wheat Flour, Vegetable Oil, Vegetable Fibre, Salt, Yeast, Sugar, Milk Solids, Natural Flavour, Cheese Powder (From Milk) (0.2%), Herb Extract, Onion Powder, Potato Starch, Food Colour (Paprika Extract), Pepper.
- Be mindful of the “cheese flavoured” snack name… meaning there’s not much actual cheese in it. Three grams for the entire pack in fact.
- Allergens: wheat, milk, gluten
- May contain: traces of egg, peanuts, sesame, soy, tree nuts
Positives
- Saturated fat content is within guidelines at 2.3g/100g. This is comparable to Sunbites with Quinoa Cheddar and Chives, and way lower than Natural Veggie Co Ring Cheese Snacks.
- Sugar is low at 2g per 100g which is expected for a savoury snack.
- One serve provides 2.2g of fibre, which puts it at the higher end of fibre in crackers with one pack meeting 10% of a school aged child’s daily fibre requirements. Surprisingly, these contain more fibre than Woolworths Multigrain Brown Rice Crackers which only give 1.3g per serve. The fibre comes from the added vegetable fibre, which is a blend of the pulp and peel of vegetables.
- Each cracker has a Bluey character on it, which is way more fun than a plain cracker… and will probably mean your kid will be more interested in them. Let me know if it causes any moral dilemmas of eating Bluey and her family though!
Negatives
- Total fat is high at 21.6g/100g, however I’m not too concerned as the saturated fat content (or the “bad” fat) is within guidelines.
- Just over the guidelines for sodium with 447mg/100g (we’re aiming for less than 400mg/100g). This is less than Natural Veggie Co Ring Cheese Snacks (568mg/100g) but more than Sunbites Cheddar and Chives (305mg/100g) and Woolworths Multigrain Brown Rice Crackers (318mg/100g).
- These are expensive and work out to $26 per kg or 56c per bag. This is comparable to other pre-packaged snacks, as you’re paying for convenience (and for the characters!)
Marketing
- Bluey is the main marketing gimmick here. Your kids are going to want you to buy “Bluey Cheese Flavoured Snacks” over “Cheese Flavoured Snacks”. Well played marketing team!
- “4.0 Star Health rating.” The high rating comes from the fibre and protein content, but keep in mind it’s high-ish in salt and total fat.
- “No Artificial colour, flavours or preservatives.” True.
Alternatives
- Overall, these are a reasonable option for an easy grab-and-go pre-packaged snack, as they’re higher in fibre than most crackers/chips/savoury snacks and are low in saturated fat and sugar. They are high-ish in salt and total fat, so keep that in mind.
