Ingredients

Water, Organic Black Rice (32%), Organic Coconut Cream (4%), Organic Sugar, Natural Flavour, Salt, Vegetable Gum (412).
Black rice is a variety of rice that gets its colour from antioxidants called anthocyanins. This is the same antioxidant that gives blueberries and eggplant their dark colouring.
Most people know my stance on organic – it says a whole lot more about how the ingredients were grown than how nutritious a food is.
Vegetable Gum keeps the texture of the pudding thick and consistent

Positives

Super simple ingredients list with main ingredients being water and 34% black rice. Lots of the other rice pudding type products I looked at had <10% rice, so 34% is great!
The fat and saturated fat are within healthy guidelines. However, almost all of the fat in this product is saturated thanks to the coconut cream.
This product is low in sugar – with only 3.4g of sugar per 100g and 4.3g per serve (the whole pouch). This is around a teaspoon of sugar. All of the other rice puddings I looked at had more than 3x the sugar content.
Low in sodium (as I would expect for this kind of product)

This is a great breakfast (or dessert) option – particularly for kids who have allergies to oats and/or dairy. Rice pudding is a nice change from porridge and a nice way to mix things up. Most rice puddings scream dessert rather than breakfast – it’s nice that the low sugar content means this one doesn’t have to be a sometimes food.
The price is quite steep for these, so if are feeling inspired by black rice pudding but have a few mouths to feed – try making your own!
For a similar tropical breakfast vibe plain old oats with a spoon of coconut milk stirred through could be something to try.
