Inside Out Milkish Oat | Chewsday Review

Hold up – there’s a brand-new milk alternative on the market! Surely that aisle of the supermarket is full by now? Inside Out’s ‘Milkish’ Oat claims to be the perfect all-in-one dairy alternative – but how does it stack up in the nutrition department?

Ingredients Ingredients
  • Oat Milk (93%) [Filtered Water, Oats (7%)], Vegetable Oil (Rapeseed), Faba Bean, Minerals (Potassium Phosphate, Calcium Phosphate, Calcium Carbonate, Magnesium, Iron), Vitamins (A, B2, B12, D), Sea Salt, Vegetable Gum (Gellan).
  • The addition of faba bean gives this ‘milk’ as much protein as regular cow’s milk.
  • Calcium, Magnesium, Iron and Vitamins A, B2, B12 and D have all been added into this product to make it more similar to cow’s milk – or should I say… more ‘milk-ish’
  • The vegetable gum gives this product its smooth texture
  • Allergens: Wheat
Positives Positives
  • This ‘milk’ contains the 3.4g of protein per 100ml, which is on par with dairy milks 3.6g/100mL. Protein is something most alternative milks lack, so this is great.
  • One serve of this milk contains 400 mg of calcium which is more than regular milk! One cup of this milk contains almost all of a toddlers daily calcium requirements.
  • No added sugar, which is something that tends to be added to a lot of milk alternatives.
  • Extremely aesthetic and eco-friendly packaging
Negatives Negatives
  • Here’s the kicker – the price. 1L of this milk costs $5, which is more than 3x the price of regular milk. If you go through a lot of milk, this would add up quickly!
  • For young children, I recommend full fat or Hilo-milk because the fat is important for growth. I like to aim for around 3.5g of fat per 100mL, but this ‘milk’ only contains 1.1g/100mL – equivalent to skim milk.
Marketing Marketing
  • ‘All the calcium, protein and uses of cow’s milk’ – Can’t argue with that!
  • ‘Eco-friendly packaging’ – This carton and cap are fully recyclable which I love
Alternatives Alternatives
  • If your little one doesn’t have an allergy to cow’s milk, I would always recommend dairy milk over an alternative milk product.
  • A fortified soy milk like the Woolworths Macro Organic Soy has the same protein and calcium as this product at the much more affordable price of $1.60/L.
  • If you are specifically looking for an oat milk, this would be a good option if you don’t mind the high price. The calcium and protein are something you don’t usually find in other oat milks.
