- Wheat flour, skim milk powder, wheat germ, yeast, salt, iron
- The flour and the milk powder are organic. Remember that this doesn’t mean any more nutritious than non-organic.
- Wheat germ is part of the wheat whole-grain and provides a natural source of fat, vitamins and minerals.
- Common allergens include: gluten/wheat and milk
- Fat, saturated fat, sugar and sodium (salt) content within healthy guidelines. No added sugar either.
- Source of iron. One rusk provides 15% of recommended intake of 6-12 month olds and 18% of recommended iron intake for 1-3 year olds.
- 27c per rusk, which seems reasonable value.
- The rusk holds its shape well, even after lots of gumming. It’s a great food for babies to learn self feeding skills.
- The sodium (salt) content is 330mg/100g, which is heading up towards the guideline of less than 400mg/100g. But, given each risk is only 8g, this works out to minimal total sodium.
- Apart from the iron, these rusks don’t provide any real nutrition. But, they also don’t exceed any nutritional guidelines and are useful for teaching self-feeding skills. So not a true negative.
- Another labelling error. The product claims to contain 18% of a 6-12 month olds iron requirements, despite only providing 15% (1.6mg of 11mg). The package also states it provides 25% of a toddler’s iron requirements despite only providing 18%. Seriously, I could spend my whole life chasing food companies about their labelling errors (and still no word back from Heinz regarding those huge marketing errors on their toddler meals
)
- “No artificial colours or flavours.” True, and I like that these aren’t sweetened or flavoured.
- There’s a super handy teething chart on the side of the pack, which gives a guide to which teeth come through and when to expect them. I thought that was kind of cool!
- I think this is a good option for a rusk, and can be useful to teach bub self-feeding skills. I don’t think it’s a necessary toddler food.
