Macro Pumped Up Pumpkin Lentil Bites | Chewsday Review
Now I can’t imagine someone getting too ‘pumped up’ over a lentil bite, but a healthy savoury snack made with veggies sounds too good to be true!
Ingredients
- Lentil Flour (25%), Chickpea Flour (21%), Vegetable Oil, Maize Flour, Rice Flour, Potato Starch, Pumpkin Powder (5%), Salt.
- It’s great to see that the two first ingredients are lentil flour and chickpea flour, which means these lentil bites are actually made of lentils!
- Allergens: None! This product doesn’t contain any of the top 9 allergens.
Positives
- These come within recommendations for sodium with 325mg of sodium per 100g. One serve contains 58mg sodium, which is around 10% of a toddlers recommended daily sodium intake. This is much less than regular potato chips, but fairly similar to savoury snacks like Sunbites and Cruskits.
- These lentil bites contain 7.8g of fibre per 100g, which is actually pretty decent and more than Grain Waves, but a little less than Messy Monkeys Whole Grain Bites. Each 18g serving contains 1.4g of fibre, which is 10% of a toddler’s daily fibre requirements and about 8% of a young school-aged child.
- Individually packaged makes these very convenient for on the go, although having lots of packaging isn’t the best for the environment.
Negatives
- These have 15.6g of fat per 100g which is higher than recommendations, but most of this is unsaturated fat and saturated fat is within recommendations so I’m not concerned. This seems to be a fairly common theme among savoury snacks, with Bluey Cheese Snacks, Sunbites and Grain Waves all being similar.
- These will cost you $5.50 for a box of 6 packets, which comes to about $50 per kg! This is on par with Messy Monkeys Whole Grain Bites, but much more than corn thins, rice cakes or crackers and other popular savoury snacks, like Sunbites and Bluey Snacks.
- For a product called ‘Pumped Up Pumpkin’, the amount of pumpkin in these is next to nothing. It’s literally less than 1g per serve…
Marketing
- “Gluten free and dairy free”. These labels makes it easy for families who need to avoid gluten and dairy, but I’m surprised they aren’t advertising that these are actually free from all of common allergens.
- “Made in Australia from at least 72% Australian ingredients”. They also advertise using Australian chickpeas and lentils, so we’re supporting some Aussie growers.
- “4.5 Star Health Rating”. No surprises that this product compares well overall to other savoury snacks.
Alternatives
- These would make good alternative for regular potato chips as they are lower in fat and sodium than regular potato chips. However, I haven’t taste tested these so no word on whether the taste is comparable!
- Low salt rice crackers or rice/corn thins are another savoury snack option. For older kids (4+) plain popcorn is also an alternative option.
