Arnott’s Teeny Tiny Teddy Berry Cereal | Chewsday Review

Tiny Teddies in your breakfast bowl? Beary interesting. Are they as nutritious as they are cute, or are they all bear and no berry? Get the full scoop in today’s Chewsday Review.

Ingredients Ingredients
  • Rice Flour, Sorghum Flour, Sugar, Chicory Root Fibre, Brown Rice Flour, Chickpea Fibre, Psyllium Husk, Raspberry Concentrate (1%), Beetroot Powder, Sunflower Oil, Natural Flavour, Anticaking Agent (Tricalcium Phosphate), Acidity Regulator (Citric Acid), Emulsifier (Lecithin).
  • 1% raspberry concentrate in a berry flavoured cereal? This is the only hint of berries at all. The redish-purple colour comes from the beetroot powder, not from berries themselves, as there’s bear-ly any in these teddies (sorry, I just had to). The majority comes from unspecified natural flavour and added sugar.
  • Sugar is third on the ingredients list so I’m expecting another high sugar cereal.
  • Allergens: None.
  • May contain: milk, soy.
Positives Positives
  • Total fat and saturated fat are low, falling within the guidelines.
  • It is very low in sodium at 11mg/100g, which is always great to see in a breakfast cereal.
  • They would make a yummy addition to a trail mix or gluten-free snack.
Negatives Negatives
  • We’ve just missed the fibre mark here with only 2.8g per serve, but it’s still a lot more than Rice Bubbles (0.8g) or Cornflakes (1.5g).
  • At $15.30 per kg, these are three times the price of our regular go-to brekkies of Weet-Bix or rolled oats at $5 per kg – ouch!
  • As suspected, the sugar content is high at 22.4g per 100g (we’re aiming for less than 15g per 100g). That is a lot higher than Rice Bubbles (8.4g per 100g) or Weet-Bix (3g per 100g).
  • Just like the Teeny Tiny Teddy Choc flavour, the berry flavour doesn’t have any added iron which is disappointing as this is a great way to include iron into the diet of a fussy toddler.
Marketing Marketing
  • ‘Aussie Made’ – with at least 90% Australian ingredients, this one gets a tick!
  • ‘Source of fibre and wholegrain’. Correct, but it could be higher.
  • “No artificial colours, flavours or preservatives”. Yes, but ‘natural’ is unspecified and is not always the best.
Alternatives Alternatives
  • Overall, the high sugar content, lack of added iron, and high cost makes the Teeny Tiny Teddy Berry Cereal an option I wouldn’t include in my regular brekkie rotation.
  • Low Sugar Cheerios or rolled oats will provide a much higher fibre and iron content, while giving you less sugar, and are much friendlier to your budget!
