- Hoki (fish), water, wheat flour, canola oil, maize flour, wheat starch, maize starch, salt, sugar, wheat gluten, yeast, acidity regulators (450, 451)
- Hoki is a fish used widely in manufactured fish products, and is the fish used in McDonalds Fillet of Fish. The fish contributes 51% of the final finger.
- Common allergens include: fish, wheat/gluten
- This product contains n-3 fatty acids (previously known as omega 3 fatty acids). These are important fatty acids for heart and brain health, amongst other things. Here the 122mg per serve is three times the general recommendations for daily n-3 intake for 1-3 year olds and double the daily recommendations for older children. This is helpful if you’re serving fish twice a week.
- Sodium intake is reasonably low for a processed/crumbed product at 248mg/100g (although this isn’t a low salt product overall). It is lower than most chicken nuggets.
- Low sugar content at 2.1g/100g, but this is mostly added sugar so not a true positive.
- Saturated fat is low at 0.8g/100g. This is a big positive.
- Dolphin safe.
- This fish finger is only 51% fish, meaning that the other 40% is primarily from starchy or floury fillers. This just means that you’re not getting a lot of high quality ingredients for what you pay for.
- ’I’ll sing you a song, a song of the sea’ Need I say any more.
- 4 star health rating, which is less than the fish nuggets from last week. Crazy!
- No artificial colours, flavours or preservatives. Yep, great.
- These are a pretty reasonable option for a fish finger. One of the higher omega 3 contents, which is a big benefit. As always, a whole piece of fish is a better alternative.
- I also don’t mind the Jamie Oliver Fish fingers or the Birds Eye Crumbed Whiting fillets for a pre-packaged fish product as an easy dinner on those nights you need something simple.
