Carman’s Vanilla Birthday Cake Oat Bars | Chewsday Review

Finding a muesli bar that is parent AND kid approved can be a challenge. Carman’s are usually my go-to recommendation for a muesli bar and this is their latest (special edition!) offering. Let’s take a closer look to see if these also get a Dr Kyla stamp of approval.

Ingredients

Whole Grain Oats 54%, Glucose, Chicory Fibre, White Choc Compound 6% (Sugar, Vegetable Oil, Milk Solids, Emulsifier [Soy Lecithin, Sunflower Lecithin], Salt, Natural Flavour), Sprinkles (Wheat Starch, Emulsifier [Soy Lecithin], Natural Colours [Spirulina Extract, Carotene, Anthocyanins, Beetroot Extract, Turmeric Extract]), Puffed Rice, Sunflower Oil, Linseeds, Golden Syrup, Sweetened Condensed Milk, Cream Powder (Milk), Natural Flavour, Humectant (Glycerin [Plant Derived]), Natural Vanilla Flavour.
Glucose (sugar) is the second ingredient in these, which is usually a sign a product will be quite high in sugar – but (spoiler!) this doesn’t seem to be the case with these.
Chicory fibre is a natural prebiotic from the Chicory Root plant, helping to add fibre to the muesli bar
These bars contain all-natural colours, which is great.
The humectant is added to keep the bar moist and chewy
Allergens: Gluten (Oats, Wheat), Milk, Soy

Positives

With 12.3g of sugar per 100g, these come in below healthy guidelines and have only 3.7g of sugar in each bar. Off to a great start!
These bars are packed with fibre – they contain almost twice the fibre of the regular Carman’s muesli bars that I recommend. One of these bars contains a 30% of a younger child’s and 20% of a school aged child’s recommended daily fibre intake.
Low in sodium, as I would expect in a muesli bar.

Negatives

These bars are a tad high in fat, just tipping over the healthy guidelines with 11.6g of fat per 100g, 4.2g of this being saturated fat (the bad kind of fat). This comes from the vegetable oil in the white chocolate and added sunflower oil.
Like all Carman’s bars – these don’t come cheap. These will set you back $5 for 6 bars. Something to consider if you go through a lot of muesli bars!
