Arnott’s Gluten Free Tiny Teddy Choc Chip Biscuits | Chewsday Review
Another recent addition to the Arnott’s range are these Gluten Free Tiny Teddy Choc Chip Biscuits. If you’ve missed out on this Aussie classic because of an allergy or intolerance to wheat, then you’re in luck! But let’s see how they compare to the real deal…
Ingredients
- Gluten Free Flour Blend (Maize Starch, Modified Tapioca Starch (1412), Rice Flour, Sorghum Flour, Soy Flour, Emulsifier (Soy Lecithin), Thickeners (415, 412, 464), Potato Starch), Sugar, Vegetable Oil, Milk Chocolate Chips (6%) (Sugar, Cocoa Solids, Milk Solids, Emulsifier (Soy Lecithin, E476)), Condensed Milk, Butter (From Milk), Vegetable Fibre, Eggs, Whey Powder (Milk), Glucose, Natural Flavour, Salt, Baking Powder.
- To make these gluten-free, Arnott’s have swapped the wheat flour for a gluten-free blend (containing soy flour).
- Other than this, there are only minor differences in the ingredients list to the original version.
- Allergens: Milk, egg and soy
Positives
- If you need to eat gluten-free you can now have Tiny Teddy Biscuits!
- Sodium is below recommendations at 395mg per 100g (it just makes the cut off), but this is higher than regular choc chip Tiny Teddy Biscuits (290mg per 100g), so is it really a positive?
- These don’t contain any nuts, so they are safe for nut-free schools.
Negatives
- Sugar is above recommendations at 27.6g per 100g, but this is similar to regular choc chip Tiny Teddy Biscuits and most commercial biscuits.
- Saturated fat (6.4g per 100g) and total fat (15.3g per 100g) are similar to the original Tiny Teddy Biscuits but slightly above recommendations. This is actually quite a lot less than Coles I’m Free From Choc Chip Cookies and a bunch of other packaged biscuits like Mini Oreos and No Nasties Project Choc Chip Minis.
- As expected for a sweet biscuit fibre is pretty low at 1.2g per serve (we’re aiming for 3g or more per serve). This is exactly the same as regular choc chip Tiny Teddy Biscuits, so neither are going to keep you full for long.
Gluten-free products are always more expensive, but this is shocking. Gluten-free Tiny Teddy Biscuits will set you back $39.20 per kg, whereas regular Tiny Teddy Biscuits are $14.70 per kg.
Marketing
- “Gluten Free.” – True, which is great for people with a wheat or gluten allergy or intolerance. If you can eat foods that contain gluten, these aren’t magically healthier or better just because they’re gluten-free.
- “No artificial colours, flavours or preservatives.” Also true but so are regular Tiny Teddy Biscuits and lots of commercial biscuits.
Alternatives
- These are pretty stock standard sweet biscuits, just without gluten. They’re not super nutritious but they are an Aussie classic.
- If you and your family can eat wheat and gluten without issues, I wouldn’t choose these. There is no benefit to eating gluten-free, unless you have an allergy or intolerance to gluten.
- For families looking for wheat-free or gluten-free biscuits, this could be another (expensive) option to include at snack time. Remember there is room for all foods as a part of a healthy diet.
