- Wheat Flour, Sugar, Vegetable Fat [Emulsifiers (471, 477), Antioxidant (307)], Dextrose (From Maize), Dried Vegetables [Freeze Dried Corn Kernels (3%), Carrot Granules (1.4%), Spinach Flakes (0.4%)], Raising Agents (450, Sodium Bicarbonate), Salt, Hydrolysed Vegetable Protein (from Maize), Chives, Natural Flavours (Ham, Cheese [Contains Milk]), Onion Powder, Vegetable Gum (Xanthan), Pepper, Colour (Annatto)
- So this is marketed as a savoury muffin mix, but the second ingredient is sugar… Not what I was hoping to see!
- The emulsifiers and vegetable gum are to keep the texture of the product consistent.
- Allergens: wheat, milk.
- I like the idea of a savoury muffin mix. I’ve never seen one before and savoury muffins are a good way to offer vegetables in a different way but… the vegetable content is questionable. See below!
- The total and saturated fat content of this muffin mix is within healthy guidelines.
- The actual amount of vegetables in these is seriously low. I’m talking less than 25 grams of vegetables in the total mix, which makes 12 muffins! So yeah, 2g of vegetables per muffin provides 3% of a vegetable serving which is 0.5% of daily requirements… This is very disappointing.
- These are very salty. Each muffin contains 564 mg of sodium, which is over the recommended daily sodium limit for babies and toddlers, and close to the limit for an older child.
- These have 7.7g of sugar per 100g, which is within healthy guidelines but just seems unnecessary for a savoury snack.
- ‘Bakery taste at home in 3 easy steps’. There’s no denying that packet muffins are easier than making muffins at home from scratch, but the added sugar, salt and lack of veggies in these outweigh the convenience for me.
- ‘Australian Made and Owned’. Always good to support Australian companies but I’d choose a different product.
- ‘No artificial colours or flavours’. True.
- I do like the idea behind these, but it goes without saying, making your own savoury muffins from scratch would be a far better option. They would have less salt and sugar and you could add way more vegetables. Members can search for my ‘Veggie muffin’ under recipes.
- These were the only savoury muffin mix I could find at the supermarket so there isn’t another brand to compare to. A different idea for an easy savoury snack would be a toasted English muffin.
