Ingredients

Roasted hazelnuts (57%), roasted cashews (30%), date powder, cacao powder (5%), sea salt.
The ingredient list looks promising, with 92% of the ingredients being hazelnut, cashews and cacao.
Date powder is made of dried and ground dates. This has been included to add some sweetness, as cacao powder has a slightly bitter flavour compared to cocoa powder.
Allergens: Hazelnuts, cashews.
May contain: Almond, brazil nut, peanut, sesame.

Positives

The sugar content in this spread is 10.6g per 100g, which meets our guidelines, and as there is no added sugar, all sugars are naturally occurring in the dates. In comparison, Nutella contains 56.3g per 100g, and Coles Hazelnut Spread contains 54g per 100g.
The sodium is very low at 60mg per 100g which is slightly higher than Nutella (42mg per 100g).
This spread is a great way to get a serve of varied nuts into your child’s diet.

Negatives

Saturated fat is above our guidelines at 5g per 100g, which comes from the nuts themselves. There are no added oils, so I’m not particularly bothered about this. In comparison, Nutella contains double this, at 10.6g per 100g of saturated fat.
Total fat is five times the recommended guidelines at 51.3g per Again, this isn’t something I’m concerned about because nuts are naturally high in fat (and protein).
This spread is quite pricey at $8.50 per 240g jar, which works out to be $35.40 per kg, compared to another no added sugar alternative, Natvia Hazelnut Spread at $20.60 per kg.

Overall, if your budget allows the higher price tag, this is a tasty nut and chocolate spread that offers a lower sugar alternative to similar products, like Nutella or Coles Hazelnut Spread. It might be something your kids could gradually get used to, as it does have quite a different taste to the regular hazelnut spread
If you’re looking for nut-free alternatives, both Buddee Chocolate Spread and Buddee Smooth Spread offer a school-friendly option, but keep in mind that they do contain added sugars that exceed our guidelines.
