- Corn (78%), canola oil, salt, sunflower oil, antioxidants (tocopherols, ascorbic acid, rosemary, extract, citric acid).
- Tostitos Tortilla Chips Lightly Salted are low in salt content at 218mg per 100g, this is lower than most of the corn chips I’ve reviewed. For comparison Mission plain tortilla strips have about 330mg per 100g and Doritos Original corn chips have 435mg per 100g.
- At 78% corn content, these chips have the highest corn content compared to other tortilla and corn chips on the market. The amount of corn in tortilla and corn chips ranges from around 69-78% corn.
- These have a reasonable amount of fibre. One serving (27g or roughly 14 chips) provides over 10% of a younger child’s and 8% of an older child’s daily fibre requirement. This is all thanks to the corn. Most potato chips contain little fibre.
- Saturated fat is within guidelines at 2.8g per 100g.
- Sugar is also within recommended guidelines, which is expected for a savoury product.
- Total fat is higher than recommendations. However, this comes from the canola and sunflower oil, which are both quality oils. You can ignore the ‘seed oil’ hype. there’s absolutely nothing problematic about these.
- At $29.70 per kg these chips are on the pricey side for tortilla and corn chips.
- “100% Australian corn”. Happy to see these are made from Australian corn. However, this statement may be a little misleading as only 78% of the chips are actually made from Australian corn.
- “No added MSG”. True. Plain chips tend to be free from MSG, whereas cheesy flavours may have MSG added for flavour. The addition of MSG to foods is regulated in Australia and is considered safe to consume.
- “No added colours or flavours”. True.
- Overall, these are higher in fibre and lower in salt compared to most other tortilla or corn chips.
- Tostitos Tortilla Chips Lightly Salted are a decent tortilla chip perfect for nacho dinner nights at home.
