CR Aldi Mini Turkey Kyiv

Mini Turkey Kyivs with Cheese & Spinach | Chewsday Review

Staying with the festive theme, let's see if I'm roasting or gobbling up these Mini Turkey Kyiv's from Aldi.

Ingredients Ingredients
  • Turkey (48%), Cheese and Spinach Filling (12%) {Cheese Blend (Milk, Cream (Milk), Salt, Stabiliser (410), Starter Culture, Enzyme (Non-Animal Rennet), Anticaking Agent (Tapioca Starch), Preservative (200)], Spinach, Sugar, Salt, Yeast Extract, Preservative (202)}, Water, Chicken (10%), Ciabatta Crumb (10%) (Wheat Flour, Olive Oil, Salt, Sugar, Yeast), Wheat Flour, Vegetable Oil, Salt, Marinade [Salt, Thickener (1442), Soy Protein Isolate, Mineral Salts (451, 450), Vegetable Gum (415)], Sugar, Yeast, Wheat Gluten, Natural Colour (160c), Onion Powder, Garlic Powder.
  • Allergens: cow’s milk, wheat, gluten and soy.
  • May contain: egg.
Positives Positives
  • These contain both turkey and chicken, so the total meat content is 58% which is about the same as Coles Mini Chicken Kyiv (57%), but higher than Woolworths Chicken Kyiv Bites (50%) and many chicken nuggets. Steggles Dino nuggets now only contain 52% chicken so these compare well.
  • Saturated fat is 3g per 100g, which is just on the cusp of my recommended target. This is about double brands of nuggets, but is less than Coles Mini Frozen Chicken Kyiv.
  • These do contain a little added sugar, but sugar content is low and within recommendations so I’m not that bothered.
Negatives Negatives
  • The sodium content is above recommendations at 554mg per 100g. This is more than both Coles Mini Chicken Kyiv (280mg per 100g) and Woolworths Chicken Kyiv Bites (464mg per 100g).
  • I’m not sure how many mini Kyiv’s are in a box (the image shows 10), but these work out to $19.97 per kg. This is cheaper than Woolworths, but a little more expensive than Coles’ version.
  • These only contain 1.2% spinach, so these aren’t contributing to daily serves of veg.
Marketing Marketing
  • “Ready in 25 minutes.” These days this doesn’t feel that fast… I’m used to seeing products boast about taking 8 minutes in the air fryer.
  • “Australian turkey and chicken.” Great.
  • “No added hormones.” This one is relying on consumers not being aware that all chicken in Aus is free of hormones.
Alternatives Alternatives
  • These feel a bit festive with the turkey, but to be completely honest I’d probably go for the Coles version (just chicken) instead. Coles Mini Chicken Kyiv’s are lower in sodium, and work out slightly cheaper.
  • If you’re looking for a novel way to offer turkey to your child, I think Inghams Turkey Christmas Nuggets bring a bit more fun being shaped as Christmas trees, but they are a little higher in salt and lower in meat content.
  • If you’re looking for more support choosing nuggets or tenders, Mealtimes members can access my guide for what to look for in both the Toddler and Family stages of the membership.
