- Wheat flour, glucose, salt and vegetable oil.
- Very simple list of ingredients with nothing out of the ordinary.
- Remember glucose is another name for added sugar.
- Common allergens: wheat (gluten).
- Oven baked means these are low in fat/saturated fat
- Low in sugar, which is as it should be for a savoury product, but the 4.5 g/100 g are mostly added not natural sugars
- No surprise here – these are very high in sodium. More than three times the recommended healthy amount per 100g. They will definitely make your toddler thirsty!
- Low in fibre.
- Low in nutrients – as far a healthy snack options go, pretzels aren’t giving you much of anything except salt.
- ‘Oven baked’ is really the only marketing spin here, to jump on the low fat bandwagon. But as you probably know by now, low fat does not automatically mean healthy.
- Not really a lot going on to promote pretzels, their simplicity and flavour kind of speaks for itself.
- Parkers also do low salt pretzel minis which contain much less sodium, though coming in at 559 mg soduim/100 g they are still over the recommended amount. They come pre portioned in six 25g snack packs, so lots of packaging which is not great, but are a better option given the salt content.
- There are a range of premium pretzel type snacks available in supermarkets which are not only much more expensive, but also just as high in salt, so no super healthy option here.
- Brown rice crackers in no salt or low salt may be a better option if you are after a similar savoury snack and contain much less sodium and a good amount of fibre.
