Peppercorn Extra Lean Beef Sausages | Chewsday Review
Some of my long-term followers will know what I think about Peppercorn Extra Lean Beef Sausages, but if you’re new around here and your family likes sausages, this Chewsday Review is for you. Read the full review to see if these sausages get a grilling from me!
Ingredients
- Australian Beef (70%), Carrot, Sauteed Onion, Rice Flour, Salt, Parsley, Preservative (223), Mineral Salt (451), Herbs and Spices, Spice Extract (Paprika Oleoresin), Natural Hog Casing.
- Soy lecithin Preservative 223 acts to keep the texture consistent in the sausage and is generally well-tolerated. Mineral salt 451 is a triphosphate and can be linked to kidney stones in susceptible people, otherwise regarded as safe.
- Common allergens: None. This product does contain sulphites which can be difficult to tolerate for some people.
Positives
- The sausages are 70% meat, and the next two ingredients by weight are carrot and onion. Usually in sausages there’s about 70% meat and then the next most plentiful ingredients are water, flour/starch or seasoning (read salt).
- The saturated fat is 3.0g per 100g, which is similar to the Paw Patrol Beef & Veggie Sausages (3.5g per 100g) and significantly less than many other varieties. For example, regular BBQ sausages are 12.5g per 100g.
- These have no added sugar, which surprisingly isn’t a given for sausages.
- The sausages actually have a little bit of fibre from the vegetables. Each sausage has 1.9g which is 13% of a toddler’s and 10% of a school-aged child’s daily requirements – impressive for a sausage!
Negatives
- They’re $10.00 for a pack for 7 sausages, which works out to about $22 per kg, and is pricey compared with homebrand sausages (approx. $12 per kg). I’m sad to point out that a few years ago these were only $8.50 a pack!
- The sodium content is 450mg per 100g which is technically just above healthy guidelines, but the lowest I have found for beef sausages. Most beef sausages are closer to 600mg of sodium per 100g, and even the Paw Patrol sausages contain 556mg sodium per 100g.
Marketing
- “Reduced fat, full flavour.” They’re a little too lean for my husband’s liking (the chef in him wants to cook them in lots of oil) but I love them.
- “Made with 100% extra lean coarsely ground Australian Beef”. Great.
- The “4 star health rating” tells us these compare quite well to other sausages.
Alternatives
- I’m certainly not claiming that sausages are a super food, but sausages do tend to be popular with kids. Some children find other forms of red meat challenging, so sausages can be a stepping stone towards eating meat products.
- I like this variety and will happily buy them from time to time when we’re having sausages. I’ve also learnt to bake my sausages atop a pile of diced roast veg. GAME CHANGER!
- The salt content means these (and any sausage) are not suitable for babies under 12 months. One sausage contains about 1.5 times a baby’s total daily salt allowance.
