CR Sun Valley True Fruit Bars 100% Tropical Fruit

Sun Valley True Fruit Bars 100% Tropical Fruit | Chewsday Review

Is it a fruit bar, a fruit strip or a fruit strap? Apparently, Sun Valley True Fruit Bars 100% Tropical Fruit is all three (yep, they do use each of these names on their website). This 100% fruit and Aussie product claims to be perfect for the lunch box or on the go, but is that as true as the packaging says? Let’s find out!

Ingredients Ingredients
  • 100% dried fruit puree, apple, pineapple, banana, mango, passionfruit.
  • The ingredients list is pretty straight forward. Essentially, it’s dried fruit that’s been pressed and wrapped in plastic.
  • Funny how this “tropical” fruit bar contains apple. When I think of a tropical island I don’t picture apple trees around me.
  • No common allergens.
Positives Positives
  • The fibre comes in at 2.6g per serve, which is pretty good for a small product (20g) but not as high as similar sized products, such as Messy Monkeys rice puff bars, which come in at 6.1g per serve.
  • Nut free, so is lunch box safe.
  • Naturally low in sodium (salt) and saturated and total fat.
Negatives Negatives
  • The sugar content is 59.3g per 100g which is very high, but keep in mind this is all naturally occurring from the dried fruit. There is no added sugar.
  • Though dried fruit is a nutritious snack it is quite sticky which isn’t great for your kiddos teeth.
  • This product is a little pricey at $37.3 per kg. You can buy dried fruit for as low as $20 per kg if you’re looking for a cheaper option.
Marketing Marketing
  • “Gluten free, no added sugar” – I mean, yes, but that’s because it’s just fruit.
  • “No added nasties” – you all know how I feel about this term by now!
  • The flipping between strip/strap/bar as a name frustrates me more than it probably should. Perhaps it’s a fruit brap! (You can hire my marketing services any time you like Sun Valley!)
Alternatives Alternatives
  • This product is just dried fruit pressed into a bar. A cheaper alternative would be to offer dried fruit, though just be mindful of the sticky bits and your child’s teeth.
  • A packet of dried fruit would also be more environmentally friendly, as there isn’t as much plastic.
  • Whole fruit! Comparatively it’s an easy and affordable snack, especially when you buy in-season.
