- Yoghurt Coating – Triple Berry (contains sugar, cocoa butter, 5.2% yoghurt powder, 4.6% full cream milk powder, 0.7% blueberry powder, 0.6% cranberry powder, 0.5% strawberry powder, emulsifier (soy lecithin)), Wholegrain Rice.
- Contains: soy, milk
- May contain: tree nuts and sesame
- No added salt, which means these have a low sodium content.
- These are a source of wholegrains, which are great for little tummies! In saying that less than half of this rice cake is the actually puffed rice and the fibre content is pretty low for a wholegrain product.
- The saturated fat is more than 4 times the recommendations. This is mostly from the cocoa butter and means overall fat is high too.
- The sugar content is double the guideline recommendations at 33.5g per 100g. This is mostly from added sugar in the “yoghurt” topping. There would only be a small amount of natural sugars from the milk and fruit powders.
- These are not cheap! They’re $3.60 for a small pack or $60 per kg, which is roughly 6 times the price of regular puffed rice cakes but a little cheaper than Only Organic Yoghurt Rice Cakes ($76 per kg).
- “Wholegrain goodness”. Again, less than half (40%) is puffed rice, which is probably less than a teaspoon of actual rice.
- “17 calories per serve”. This is more aimed at adults who might be trying to reduce their energy intake- so not really relevant here
- “Gluten free”. This is similar to most rice-based snacks. If your child have coeliac disease or are gluten intolerant this is important, but it doesn’t make it more nutritious for anyone else.
- “100% all natural”, “Fructose friendly” and “GMO Free”. Don’t let this marketing fool you. The ingredients might be “natural” or “organic” but that doesn’t automatically make it a superior option.
- Overall these are an expensive snack option that is high in added sugar and saturated fat and low in fibre.
- These are almost identical to the Only Organic Yoghurt Rice Cakes that got me all hot around the collar in a previous Chewsday Review. I really don’t like people being tricked into buying products that are high in added sugar because they are told it’s “organic” or “all natural,” don’t be fooled!
- Choose regular puffed rice cakes and add your own toppings, like yoghurt, nut butter or fruit puree, for a cheaper option with less added sugar.
The composition of food products changes regularly. The nutritional values of the products in this Chewsday Review were correct at the time of publishing.
