Tip Top The One White Sandwich Bread | Chewsday Review

This week we're finding out if Tip Top The One Sandwich bread is the one to put in your shopping trolley.

Ingredients Ingredients
  • Unbleached Wheat Flour, Water, Wheat Fibre, Modified Tapioca Starch (1412), Baker’s Yeast, Vinegar, Wheat Gluten, Iodised Salt, Vegetable Gum (412), Canola Oil, Soy Flour, Vegetable Emulsifiers (481, 472e, 471), Minerals (Iron, Zinc), Vitamins (Vitamin E, Niacin, Thiamin, Vitamin B6, Folic Acid), Processing Aid (Wheat).
  • All fairly typical ingredients for a packaged bread.
  • This bread has added iron, zinc, vitamin E, niacin, thiamin, vitamin B6, folic acid.
  • Allergens: wheat (gluten), soy.
  • May contain: sesame.
Positives Positives
  • Having iron added is one of the biggest positives for this loaf. It’s not critical for bread to contain iron, but if you’ve got a kiddo who doesn’t eat a lot of high iron foods it can be helpful to offer. Two slices of bread contains 4.4mg of iron, which is about the equivalent of 3 Weet-Bix.
  • For a white bread the fibre content is decent. Two slices proves 5.6g of fibre, which is just under a 1/3 of a young child’s daily fibre.
  • Sodium meets recommendations at 380mg per 100g. Most packaged breads are around this mark but some bakery breads can be a little higher.
  • The cost of packaged supermarket breads ranges from $2.70 to $7.90, so at $4.50 a loaf this sits on the cheaper end of the range.
Negatives Negatives
  • This bread doesn’t contain any wholegrains. Most multigrain breads will contribute some wholegrains to your child’s diet, but the key is to look for breads containing wholegrains, like rolled oats, kibbled rye or kibbled wheat, in the ingredients list.
  • This contains soy so is not suitable for soy allergy families.
Marketing Marketing
  • “High in fibre”. True, and the fibre content has been boosted by the addition of some extra wheat fibre.
  • “Source of protein”. I’m pointing out this claim as some people don’t realise that bread is a source of protein. Two slices of this bread contain 6.7g of protein, which is equivalent to about 1/3 of a young child’s recommended daily intake of protein.
  • “4.5 star health rating”. This tells us that Tip Top The One White Sandwich Bread compares well to other supermarket breads.
Alternatives Alternatives
  • For kids struggling with high iron foods this iron-fortified bread can be super helpful. It contains a decent amount of fibre and sodium compares well against other supermarket breads.
  • Tip Top’s The One wholemeal and Wonder White’s +Vitamins and Minerals white and wholemeal breads are all very similar nutritionally. Coles and Woolworths also both have a high fibre white bread that also contain iron and other vitamins and minerals, which is cheaper.
  • If you need more support choosing bread for your child, each of my memberships have a guide to choosing bread including examples of easy to find supermarket brands to make.
