Uncle Toby’s Nutritious Snacks Chocolate Chip Oat Slice | Chewsday Review
Another day, another oat bar! How does this oat bar compare to the rest? Today’s Chewsday Review crunches the numbers on the Uncle Toby’s Nutritious Snacks Chocolate Chip Oat Slice.
Ingredients
- Whole Grains (50%) [Rolled Oats (27%), Wholemeal Wheat Flour(23%)], Choc Chips (13%) [Sugar, Vegetable Fat, Milk Solids, Cocoa Powder, Emulsifier (Soy Lecithin), Natural Flavour, Salt], Humectant (Glycerol), Unsalted Butter (From Milk), Brown Sugar, Chicory Root Fibre, Honey (5%), Egg Powder, Skim Milk Powder, Natural Flavour, Raising Agent (Sodium Bicarbonate), Emulsifier (Soy Lecithin), Salt. Contains Gluten (Wheat and Oats), Egg, Milk and Soy.
- Added sugars include brown sugar and honey. The honey also binds the bar together.
- The chicory fibre bumps up the fibre content a little!
- Egg powder, skim milk powder, humectant (glycerol) and soy lecithin are pretty standard commercial baking ingredients and not things I’m worried about.
- Allergens: Gluten, Milk, Egg, Wheat, Oats, Soy.
- May contain: Lupin, Peanuts, Tree nuts, Barley.
Positives
- With 3.4g of fibre per bar (28% of toddler and 19% of child’s recommended daily intake), these oat slices are considered a source of fibre and have on average 1g more fibre than similar products, such as Carman’s Oat Slices and Mother Earth’s Baked Oaty Slices.
- Being individually packaged and nut-free, these are a convenient lunchbox options, with a different texture to standard muesli bars.
Negatives
- The sugar content of these bars is high at 21.6g/100g, especially considering there’s no fruit. This is similar to many commercial oat slices, but much higher than Carman’s Brownie with Choc Aussie Oat Bars which only has 7.7g/100g.
- These bars exceed our guidelines for fat and saturated fat, mainly thanks to the chocolate chips and butter. Although above the guidelines, it’s still less than others like the Mother Earth Baked Oaty Slices.
- It’s definitely not the most cost-effective snack! At $5.50 for 4 bars, these cost you $1.40 a bar. To put this into perspective, they are more expensive than Mother Earth Oaty Slices (50c/bar) and Carman’s Oat Slices ($1/bar), but cheaper than All Natural Bakery Oat Slices ($2.70/bar).
Marketing
- ‘High in whole grains’ is an accurate claim, as 50% of the bar is made with wholegrain oats and flour.
- A 2.5/5 Health Star Rating means they rank in the middle compared to other oat bars.
Alternatives
- These oat bars have a decent amount of fibre for a snack, but are high in saturated fat and sugar, and they’re expensive. I don’t love them. A better choice could be ‘Carman’s Brownie Oat Bars’ which are higher in fibre, and lower in sugar and saturated fat.
