Uncle Tobys Yoghurt strawberry muesli bars | Chewsday Review
Another Chewsday, and another muesli bar review. This is a classic ‘yoghurt’ coated muesli bar, so let’s see how it compares to the rest. Today’s review features Uncle Tobys Yoghurt & Strawberry muesli bars.
Ingredients
- Muesli Blend: [Uncle Tobys Rolled Oats (34%), Wheat (11%), Breakfast Cereal (Whole Grain Wheat (5%), Wheat Flour, Wheat Bran, Sugar, Vitamin E), Strawberry Pieces (Strawberry Puree (1%)), Coconut, Milk Powder], Glucose, Yoghurt Compound (Milk) [Sugar, Vegetable Fat, Yoghurt Powder (1.3%), Whey Powder, Emulsifiers (Soy Lecithin, 492), Food Acid (Citric)], Chicory Root Fibre, Sunflower Oil, Sugar, Humectant (Glycerine), Modified Starch (1412), Berry Juice Concentrate [Strawberry (0.6%)], Invert Sugar, Honey, Natural Flavour, Emulsifier ( Soy Lecithin),
- Glucose, invert sugar, and honey are all types of added sugar.
- Chicory root fibre helps bump up the fibre content.
- The yoghurt compound is made of only 1.3% yoghurt powder.
- The strawberry content is 1% strawberry puree, and 0.6% strawberry juice.
- Soy lecithin acts to keep the texture consistent in the biscuit and is generally well-tolerated.
- Common allergens: Wheat (Gluten), Milk, Soy.
Positives
- These have a reasonable fibre content, with 3.3g per muesli bar, which is good for little tummies. This works out to 23.5% of a young child’s fibre recommendation, and 18.3% of an older child’s daily fibre recommendations. It’s also over 30 times the amount of fibre in an LCMs Split Stix Yoghurty bar.
- Very low sodium (salt) content. Great!
Negatives
- The sugar content comes in at 18.5g per 100g, which is above the recommendations. Almost all of this (apart from the 1.6% strawberry) comes from added sugar. Not ideal.
- The overall fat content is higher than recommendations and the saturated fat (4.3g/100g) also exceeds guidelines by over 30%. There are no nuts in these bars, so this fat mostly comes from the added oils.
- The ‘yoghurt’ isn’t really yoghurt. It’s essentially sugar and fat. This is a great example of why it is helpful to read and make sense of the ingredients list.
- The entire product is only 1.6% strawberry (puree and juice), so each muesli bar contains about half a gram of strawberry!
Marketing
- “100% Australian wholegrain oats,” Well, the oats make up a third of the bar, so even though they’re all Australian oats, this bar isn’t just all oats.
- “4 health stars.” This is only because of the small serving size, and the fact that they’re better than others on the market.
- “Packed with 100% Australian oats and wholesome energy to enjoy the great Aussie outdoors.” They’re really harping on about the Aussie oats. I’d have to argue with glucose, yoghurt compound and invert sugar providing ‘wholesome energy’.
- “Source of fibre.” True.
Alternatives
- This product has a decent amount of fibre, but has more added sugar and saturated fat than I’d like for me to recommend it as a regular snack option.
- It still compares well to some other snack bars, like the LCMs Split Stix Yoghurty and this is reflected in the 4 star health star rating.
- For lower sugar and saturated fat, and even more fibre I’d still be opting for a Carman’s muesli bar, like the new Berries & Yoghurt Aussie Oat Bars.
