CR Vita Brits 2022

Vita Brits | Chewsday Review

This week we’re back in the breakfast aisle to find out if there really is any difference between Vita Brits and Weet-Bix. Is one a better option than the other? You know what to do, check out the Chewsday Review to find out.

Ingredients Ingredients
  • Wholegrain wheat (99%), salt blend (salt, mineral sea salts)
  • Very simple ingredient list, love that!
Positives Positives
  • With no added sugar these are obviously very low in sugar at 0.4g per 100g. This is less than Weet-Bix Little Kids Essentials (2.9g per 100g) and regular Weet-Bix (3.3g per 100g), which both have a small amount of sugar added (but are still within the healthy guidelines too).
  • Vita Brits are an excellent source of fibre with 4.2g per serve. This provides roughly 25% of your little ones recommended daily fibre intake. This is pretty much identical to Weet-Bix Little Kids Essentials and a little more than regular Weet-Bix (3.3g per serve).
  • This product has added salt (sodium) with 395mg per 100g, just making the cut off to stay within the healthy guidelines. The salt content is higher than regular Weet-Bix (270mg per 100g) and much higher than Weet-Bix Little Kids Essentials (only 12mg per 100g).
  • These are low in total and saturated fat, and well within the guidelines.
Negatives Negatives
  • This cereal has no added vitamins or minerals, which we often see with breakfast cereals. I particularly like that Weet-Bix and Weet-Bix Little Kids Essentials have added iron, as getting enough iron is a priority with babies and young children, particularly among fussy eaters.
Marketing Marketing
  • “NO ADDED SUGAR”. This is true, and great considering lots of brekkie cereals are high in added sugar, but the capital letters are a bit shouty.
  • “99% wholegrains” This is also true, and also great.
  • “Simple Natural Goodness”. These buzzwords are a bit of a reg flag as they don’t tell us much about nutrition, but in this case it is a reasonable product so I’ll let it slide…
Alternatives Alternatives
  • Overall, Vita Brits are super similar nutritionally (and price wise) to regular Weet-Bix. Both are considered low salt, low sugar, and high fibre options, which is what we’re aiming for for regular brekkie options.
  • Vita Brits don’t have added iron like regular Weet-Bix and Weet-Bix Little Kids Essentials, so if this is a staple breakfast for your little one or they don’t enjoy other iron rich foods, this may be a very important difference!
  • I would still recommend opting for the Weet-Bix Little Kids Essentials for babies under 12 months because of the lower salt and added iron, though they do come at a higher price than Vita Brits and regular Weet-Bix.
