CR Woolworths Chicken Breast Bites

Woolworths Chicken Breast Bites Original | Chewsday Review

Looks like a nugget, but contains a decent amount of chicken? I've got high eggs-spectations. Let's see if these chicken breast bites are im-peck-able or leave me feeling crumb-y. Laying the puns on too chick? Don't mind me!

Ingredients Ingredients
  • RSPCA Approved Chicken Breast (75%), Coating (25%) (Wheat Flour, Water, Canola Oil, Wheat Starch, Rice Flour, Salt, Maize Flour (Wheat), Spices, Raising Agents (Sodium Carbonate, 541), Mineral Salts (450, Sodium Carbonate), Whey Powder (Milk), Anticaking Agent (551), Vegetable Extract).
  • Three quarters of this product is made up of chicken, with the remainder being the coating. With chicken nuggets generally containing 50-60% chicken, this looks promising!
  • Allergens: milk, gluten, wheat.
  • May contain: soy.
Positives Positives
  • Sodium (salt) content is 250mg per 100g, which is well below our target of 400mg per 100g. Most chicken nuggets have a sodium content of 400 to 700 mg per 100g, so this is definitely a positive.
  • Total fat (4.5g per 100g) and saturated fat (<1.0g) are both within recommendations.
  • Sugar content (1.6g per 100g), with no added sugar.
  • Like most crumbed freezer products, these chicken breast bites are super convenient. They’re ready in 10 minutes in the air fryer, or 15 minutes in the oven.
  • These could be useful as a step between chicken nuggets and home made crumbed chicken for kids who are sensitive to changes in taste and texture.
Negatives Negatives
  • At $30 per kg, these chicken breast bites don’t come cheap. That’s more than double the price of Steggles Tempura Chicken Dino Snacks ($13.50 per kg) and almost three times the price of supermarket-branded chicken nuggets ($11 per kg).
Marketing Marketing
  • ‘High protein’. These chicken breast bites contain 17.9g protein per 100g, which is higher than the protein content of most nuggets (10-14g protein per 100g). But most kids, fussy eaters included, get enough protein from their diet without high protein foods.
  • ‘Made with Australian Chicken’. They’re made in Australia dfrom at least 96% Australian ingredients. Tick!
  • ‘No artificial colours, flavours or preservatives’. True.
  • ‘4 star health rating’. This rating tells us these chicken bites rate well against other crumbed frozen chicken products.
Alternatives Alternatives
  • The chicken content, low sodium and low saturated fat content make these chicken bites a great option for kids who are ready to progress from chicken nuggets, but still learning to like home made crumbed or plain chicken.
  • If your child prefers nuggets or you’re looking for a penny pinching option, Coles or Woolworths Tempura Chicken Nuggets are also low in sodium and saturated fat. They’re a fraction of the price, but do also have a lower chicken content (52-53%).
