CR Yumi's Hommus

Yumi’s Hommus | Chewsday Review

This week's Chewsday Review is the humble hommus. Is this one worth a dip, or should we spread our love elsewhere?

Ingredients Ingredients
  • Cooked Chickpeas (66%), Canola Oil, Tahini Paste (Sesame), Acidity Regulator (575), Salt, Food Acids (Citric Acid, Acetic Acid), Garlic (0.5%), Mineral Salt (Sodium Bicarbonate), Preservative (202).
  • Around two thirds of this dip is made from chickpeas. The cooked chickpea content of store-bought hommus ranges from 53 to 86 percent.
  • I spy two types of added salt in here, so I expect the sodium content to be high.
  • Allergens: sesame.
  • May contain: eggs, fish, lupin, tree nuts.
Positives Positives
  • At 0.6g per 100g, the sugar content in this dip is very low given there is no added sugar.
  • The dietary fibre content wasn’t listed on the packaging, but by calculating the amount of fibre in the chickpeas alone, it came in at about 2.7g of dietary fibre per serving. Adding the fibre from the tahini paste would mean it would likely meet our guidelines.
  • The saturated fat in this hommus is within guidelines at 2.6g per 100g. Total fat (24.7g per 100g) exceeds our target thanks to the canola oil and tahini paste, but this isn’t concerning.
Negatives Negatives
  • Sodium levels are slightly above our target at 410mg per 100g, due to the added salt and mineral salts. This sodium content sits in the middle of the store-bought hommus range, with Obela being the saltiest plain hommus (535mg per 100g) and Chris’ Dips Smooth Hommus (385mg per 100g), Coles Classic Hommus (310mg per 100g) and Aldi Deli Originals Hommus Dip (386mg per 100g) coming in at the lower end.
  • Buying this dip in a 200g container is $4.50 at the supermarket, and works out at $22.50 per kg – which is more expensive than I expected! If your family eats a lot of hommus, buying the 1kg tub for $8.00 is a much more cost effective option. Coles Hommus Dip 200g is a cheaper option at $2.60 ($13.00 per kg) or $6.50 for a 1kg tub.
Marketing Marketing
  • ‘Dairy & gluten free’. Yes, these claims are regulated.
  • ‘Made in Australia from at least 84% Australian ingredients’. Correct, claims like this are regulated under the Australian Consumer Law.
Alternatives Alternatives
  • Yumi’s Traditional Hommus isn’t my top pick due to the lower chickpea content and price tag. Coles Hommus Dip 200g is a cheaper option at $2.60 for a 200g tub and offers a higher chickpea content, and lower sodium and total fat.
  • Hommus is super easy (and cheap!) to make at home too. Baby, Toddler and Family Mealtimes members have access to my delicious hommus recipe. Enjoy it as a spread on toast, sandwiches or wraps, use it as a dip, or serve as a side with meat or vegetables.
