Ingredients Ingredients
  • Wheat Flour (61%), Water, Humectant (Glycerin), Vegetable Oil, Wheat Gluten, Emulsifier (Mono- and Di-Glycerides of Fatty Acids), Dextrose, Raising Agents (Sodium Bicarbonate, Sodium Acid Pyrophosphate), Food Acids (Fumaric Acid, Glucono Delta-Lactone), Salt, Preservative (Potassium Sorbate).
  • Dextrose is a type of sugar that usually comes from corn or wheat.
  • The humectant, emulsifiers, and preservative help to keep the texture and prolong the shelf-life of the tortillas.
  • Allergens: wheat, gluten
Positives Positives
  • The sodium content (351mg per 100g) is within guidelines. One mini tortilla provides 88mg of sodium per 100g, which is equivalent to less than 30% of a younger childs and 20% of an older child’s daily sodium requirements. These have less than half the sodium content of the saltiest tortillas and wraps on the market (Mission Original tortillas at 1070mg per 100g and Mission Wholegrain wraps at 900mg per 100g).
  • Total fat (6.8g per 100g) and saturated fat (0.8g per 100g) are within our recommendations. Surprisingly, Old El Paso tortillas tend to be lower in total fat and saturated fat compared to other tortillas and wraps currently on supermarket shelves. These tortillas have 4 times less saturated fat compared to Mission Street Mini Taco wraps (4.1g per 100g) and Coles Wholemeal & Grain Soft Wraps (3.4g per 100g).
  • Low in sugar as expected for a savoury product. Although, it does contain some added sugar.
Negatives Negatives
  • Old El Paso Mini Tortillas are low in fibre with only 0.5g of fibre per wrap. This is due to the wrap being mostly made up of wheat flour that has been refined, making it low in fibre.
  • Many tortillas and wraps, and all breads in Australia have thiamin added in the wheat flour. However, these mini tortillas have no added thiamin. Thiamin has an important role in helping the body convert food into energy and keeping the nervous system healthy.
Marketing Marketing
  • “Suitable for vegetarians and vegans.” True, there are no animal products in the ingredients list.
  • “Super soft and flexible…these tortillas are easy to use and extra fun for little hands!” I can agree, these mini tortillas are soft and the mini size is great for kids to make soft tacos, fajitas or mini wraps.
Alternatives Alternatives
  • Old El Paso Mini Tortillas are lower in salt and saturated fat than lots of other tortilla and mini wraps on the market, however are low in fibre.
  • For a higher fibre option, look for wholegrain or wholemeal tortillas or wraps. Old El Paso Wholegrain Tortillas are similar, but have more fibre and added thiamin.
  • For a gluten-free alternative, Mission White Corn Gluten-Free Tortillas are also lower in salt and saturated fat, and have a bit more fibre.
