- Wheat Flour, Vegetable Oil, Salt (2.4%), Sea Salt (1.2%), Yeast, Barley Malt Extract, Raising Agent (500).
- Salt is listed as the third and fourth ingredients, so I’m expecting the salt content to be quite high.
- Barley malt extract is a type of sugar.
- Allergens: Gluten, Wheat.
- May contain: Egg, Milk, Sesame
- Sprinters Pretzel Twists are low in sugar. This is expected for a savoury product, however the 2.5g of sugar per 100g comes mostly from the added sugar (barley malt extract).
- Total fat and saturated fat meet our targets. Oven baking helps to keep the fat content lower compared to frying.
- At $10 per kg, these are less than half the price of Parker’s Pretzels ($24 per kg).
- The sodium content of these pretzels is very high (1480mg per 100g). This is similar to other pretzels on the market like Parker’s Oven Baked Wheat Pretzel Twists (1300mg per 100g), and comparable to Smith’s Original chips (1380mg per 100g).
- The fibre content isn’t listed on the nutrition information panel. But, these pretzels are likely to be low in fibre as the wheat flour isn’t a wholemeal or wholegrain flour.
- “No artificial colours, flavours or preservatives” – true.
- “Baked not fried” – oven baking compared to frying helps to keep the fat content low.
- “Oven baked topped with salt” – they are really trying to drive the oven baked message by saying it again and yes, these are a salty snack!
- “No added MSG” – correct, there is no MSG in the ingredients list.
- These Sprinter’s Pretzel Twists are very high in salt and low in fibre.
- For a lower salt, savoury snack option, try choosing the Happy Snack Company Roasted Fava Beans or Chickpeas, or other wholegrain options, such as rice cakes or crackers, or corn thins.
