CR Uncle Toby’s Honey Cheerios

Uncle Tobys Honey Cheerios | Chewsday Review

Low Sugar Vanilla Cheerios have been a long term favourite in my brekkie rotation, so let's see if the honey flavour are in or out of the loop.

Ingredients Ingredients
  • Whole Grain Cereals (64%) Wheat (31%), Corn (24%), Oats (4.5%), Rice (4.5%), Wheat Starch, Sugar, Honey (3.5%), Vegetable Oil, Chicory Root Fibre, Colours (Caramel 1, Annatto), Salt, Natural Flavour, Acidity Regulator (Trisodium Phosphate). Added Minerals (Calcium, Iron, Zinc), and Vitamins (C, Niacin, E, B1, B6, B2, Folic Acid).
  • Over half the cereal is made from whole grains. It also has added chicory root fibre, so I’m expecting the fibre content to be decent.
  • Despite being honey flavoured, these Cheerios contain more sugar than honey, which makes up only 3.5% of the product.
  • Allergens: Wheat, Gluten
  • May contain: Rye, Barley, Milk, Soy
Positives Positives
  • Uncle Tobys Honey Cheerios are fortified with iron, making them a good option for fussy eaters who might find it difficult to consume enough iron rich foods. Each serving provides 3.0mg of iron which is around 30% of a child’s daily iron requirements, and comparable to the iron content of 2 Weet-Bix.
  • This cereal also contains added calcium which can be helpful for kids who are unable to consume dairy products. One serving provides 120mg of calcium which is around a third of the calcium content of a cup of milk.
  • Although they have added salt, the sodium content of Uncle Tobys Cheerios is within healthy guidelines at 265mg per 100g. This slightly lower than regular Weet-Bix (270mg per 100g).
  • Fat and saturated fat are well within guidelines.
Negatives Negatives
  • At 2.3g per serve, the fibre content of these Honey Cheerios doesn’t quite hit the mark. Despite the whole grain content and chicory root fibre, it’s less than half the fibre content of Low Sugar Vanilla Cheerios (4.8g per serve) and Weet-Bix (4g per serve).
  • Sugar is slightly above recommendations at 17.8g per 100g. Comparatively, Low Sugar Vanilla Cheerios have 4.1g of sugar per 100g and Weet-Bix have an even lower sugar content of 3.0g per 100g.
  • At $14.66/kg Uncle Tobys Honey Cheerios are on the higher side in the price department. They’re similarly priced to Low Sugar Vanilla Cheerios ($16.70 per kg), but more expensive than regular Weet-Bix ($5 per kg) and oats ($1.70 per kg).
Marketing Marketing
  • “Fibre from 4 Whole Grains.” Yes there is fibre, and there are four wholegrains, but I’d like to see more in this cereal.
  • “10 vitamins and minerals.” True.
  • “Little Os, Happy Days. With Cheerios, your family will start the day on the most positive note!”. Now this is a bit of a stretch. It takes more than cereal to tackle toddler tantrums in my house!
Alternatives Alternatives
  • Uncle Tobys Honey Cheerios aren’t my go-to brekkie cereal due to their lower fibre content, higher sugar content and higher price tag.
  • If your family enjoys the honey flavour, you could add Honey Cheerios as a breakfast sprinkle on top of other cereals, include them in a trail mix, or add a drizzle of honey to your regular cereal.
  • Weet-Bix and oats remain hard to beat, with Sultana Bran and Low Sugar Vanilla Cheerios coming in as my top picks for flavoured cereal options.
