- Whole Grain Wheat (75%), Dried Fruit [Sultanas (8%), Apple (4%), Apricot (2%) (Humectant (Glycerol)), Coconut (1%), Preservatives (Sulphites, 220, 223)], Sugar, Wheat Germ, Salt, Flavour (Wheat), Food Acid (Citric).
- Added vitamins (C, Niacin, B2, B1, Folic Acid).
- Allergens: Wheat, Gluten, Sulphites
- May contain: Oat, Rye, Barley, Milk, Soy, Tree Nuts, Lupin
- Great source of fibre with 4.4g per serve. This provides 24% of a young primary school-aged child’s daily fibre intake. It’s a little bit more than regular Weet-Bix (4g per serve) and Weet-Bix Kids (4.1g per serve).
- The sodium content of Uncle Toby’s Cereal Plus Muesli Flakes is within healthy guidelines at 310mg per 100g, although slightly higher than regular Weet-bix (270mg per 100g) and Sultana Bran (260 mg per 100g).
- Sugar (18.6g per 100g) is higher than our target of 15g per 100g. However, a decent proportion of this is coming from the dried fruit (14% of the product), which is preferable to added sugar. For a lower sugar option, Low Sugar Vanilla Cheerios only has 4.1g per 100g.
- This cereal is not iron fortified. Wholegrain wheat naturally contains some iron (not written in the nutrition information panel) however, it’s not much. Other cereals fortified with iron can be helpful for kids who struggle to eat other high iron foods.
- At $12.50/kg, Uncle Toby’s Plus Muesli Flakes are mid-range in the price department. They’re cheaper than Low Sugar Vanilla Cheerios ($16.70/kg), but pricier than regular Weet-bix ($5/kg) and oats ($1.70/kg).
- ‘Source of fibre’. – This is true.
- ‘Fibre from whole grain to support healthy digestion’. – True, it’s well established that wholegrains provide fibre that help with digestion. Although it’s not exclusive to Uncle Toby’s Muesli Flakes, fibre can be found in a variety of foods such as a can of baked beans, fruits and high fibre bread (e.g. wholemeal, multigrain or high-fibre white).
- ‘A delicious mix of juicy sultanas, apple, apricot, coconut and wholegrains, providing a bowl full of goodness that is nutritious and delicious!’ – I really think the marketing team could be a bit more succinct here.
- While Uncle Toby’s Cereal Plus Muesli Flakes is high in fibre, it’s not my go-to brekkie cereal as it’s not fortified with iron.
- Low Sugar Vanilla Cheerios, Weet-Bix, and oats are still my top picks. For something similar, I’d choose Sultana Bran as it has less sodium, more fibre and is iron-fortified.
