Aldi Viva Wholemeal High Fibre Vitamins and Minerals | Chewsday Review

Aldi products are known for prices that leave the competition crumbling. So is this the wholemeal loaf your lunchbox has been kneading?

Positives Positives
  • At 7.1g per 100g, this bread provides a great amount of fibre. It contains 5.3g per serve (2 slices), which is just under a 1/3 of a young child’s daily fibre requirements.
  • This bread is very affordable and cheaper when compared to similar breads. Viva is $3.00 for a 700g loaf, whereas Coles and Woolworths home brand options are $3.25 and $3.50 per 700g loaf, respectively. Wonder White Wholemeal Plus Iron and Tip Top The One Wholemeal are the most expensive iron-fortified breads, costing $4.60 per 700g loaf.
  • At 323mg per 100g, sodium is also within guidelines.
Negatives Negatives
  • Those with a soy allergy should be aware that this bread contains soy, which is often used in bread-making for its texture-enhancing properties.
Marketing Marketing
  • “High fibre.” Definitely!
  • “Good source of iron.” Yep, thanks to the added iron.
  • “Source of protein.” True, but most Australian children meet their daily protein requirements, so this isn’t usually something you need to look out for.
Alternatives Alternatives
  • Overall, this is a great high-fibre wholemeal bread option. It’s no secret I love an iron-fortified bread for kids with limited high iron foods.
  • It’s competitively priced compared to similar breads, but if you’re not a regular Aldi shopper, it might feel easier to find a similar bread in your preferred grocery store.
