Brownes Natural Traditional Yoghurt | Chewsday Review

This week’s Chewsday Review features the udderly delicious Brownes Natural Yoghurt. While it’s a staple in many household fridges, let’s see if this creamy contender can hold its own in the taste and nutrition stakes.

Ingredients Ingredients
  • Milk, Milk Solids, Cream (From Milk), Live Cultures (including L. acidophilus, Bifidobacterium, L. casei).
  • Sugar is not listed as an ingredient, which means that no sugar has been added. Remember, that lactose is a naturally occurring sugar present in dairy foods, so there will be some sugar on the nutrition information panel. This isn’t something to be concerned about.
  • Common allergens: milk
Positives Positives
  • With no added sugar, the sugar content of Brownes Natural Yoghurt (4.2g per 100g) easily comes in below recommendations. This is lower than other plain, unflavoured yoghurts on the market, like Five:Am Organic Greek Yoghurt (4.6g sugar per 100g) and Tamar Valley Greek Style Natural Yoghurt (6.7g sugar per 100g).
  • This particular yoghurt includes live cultures L. casei, Bifidobacterium, and L. acidophilus, of which all strains are recognised for their potential health benefits.
  • At 230mg per 100g, Brownes Natural Yoghurt is high in calcium.
  • The 1kg family sized tub is great for reducing soft plastic use. Offering yoghurt from a bowl and spoon wherever possible gives kids the opportunity to interact with the food they’re eating, as well as develop spoon feeding skills.
  • It’s about half the price of most other Greek or natural youghurts!
Negatives Negatives
  • At 3.4g per 100g, the saturated fat content of this yoghurt is slightly above recommended levels. This comes from the two ingredients in the greatest amount, whole milk and cream, and is in keeping with the saturated fat content of other natural yoghurts (1.2 to 3.0g per 100g). I wouldn’t consider this a true negative, as current evidence suggests that you can confidently offer either full fat or reduced fat dairy products to your children, depending on what your family enjoys.
Marketing Marketing
  • ‘Creamy unsweetened yoghurt’. This is no word of a lie. The ingredients in this yoghurt are short and sweet, with no added sugar, and it does have a really creamy mouthfeel.
  • ‘Abundance of live cultures and probiotics’. True.
Alternatives Alternatives
  • Brownes Natural Yoghurt is a solid choice overall. I particularly like the large tub size, high calcium content and no added sugar. Although the saturated fat content is at the upper end of recommendations, this is still lower than most Greek yoghurts and not of concern according to current evidence. After reviewing this, I’ve actually switched to use it as my daily yoghurt!
  • If your family prefers low fat yoghurt, Brownes Low Fat Natural is another option. It’s lower in saturated fat, but does have a small amount of added sugar.
