- Lactose Free Yoghurt (88%) (Milk, Milk Solids, Cream (From Milk), Prebiotic (Chicory Root Fibre (0.8%)), Enzyme (Lactase), Live Yoghurt Cultures (including probiotics – L. acidophilus, Bifidobacteria, L. casei)), Mango Sauce (12%) (Mango Puree (50%), Water, Rice Starch, Natural Flavour, Lemon Pulp, Acidity Regulator (Sodium Citrate).
- Lactase (a type of enzyme) has been added to this product, to break down lactose (the sugar naturally found in milk) and make the yoghurt lactose free.
- Mango only makes up 6% of the yoghurt.
- Allergens: milk
- The sugar content in this pouch is within guidelines at 5.1g per 100g. This is similar to Woolworths No Added Sugar pouches (5g sugar per 100g). The sugar comes from the natural sugar found in milk, and mango puree which is added for flavour.
- Brownes Dairy Wiggles pouches are high in calcium (176mg per 100g) and meet our calcium target of 120mg per 100g. One pouch provides 158mg of calcium, which is equal to 31% of a toddler’s and 22% of a younger, primary school-aged child’s daily calcium requirement.
- Saturated fat (3g per 100g) just meets recommendations. For comparison, it’s lower than Tamar Valley and Aldi’s Booklea pouches (both 4.6g per 100g), but slightly higher than Woolworths No Added Sugar pouches (2.6g per 100g).
- This yoghurt pouch has a competitive price of $1.22 per 100g at Woolworths, similar to Woolworths No Added Sugar pouches ($1.23 per 100g). Interestingly though, this pouch costs more at Coles ($1.56 per 100g). For an even cheaper option (with less single use plastic), choose a family sized tub (albeit with some added sugar).
- Squeezie pouches can be a convenient and less messy option than using a spoon, but they don’t help kids develop their biting and chewing skills or allow for the sensory experience that comes with a bowl. Single-use plastic pouches also aren’t the best for the environment. I prefer yoghurt scooped out of bigger tubs into bowls where possible.
- “The Wiggles” – Well-played Brownes Dairy, partnering with The Wiggles to get the attention of little ones.
- “With prebiotics and probiotics” – Yes, the ingredients contain both probiotics (good bacteria for our gut) and prebiotics (food for the gut bacteria).
- “Lactose-free” – True, lactase (a type of enzyme) has been added to break down the lactose sugar naturally found in milk, making it lactose free. This is great for people with lactose intolerance. If you can eat foods that contain lactose, these aren’t better or healthier because they’re lactose free.
- “Gluten and gelatin-free” – True, there is no gluten or gelatin in the ingredients list. Most plain yoghurts are gluten-free, although some flavourings and sweeteners added to commercial yoghurts can contain gluten. Some yoghurts contain gelatin to enhance the thickness and creaminess of the yoghurt.
- Overall, Brownes Dairy Wiggles No Added Sugar yoghurt pouches are a reasonable flavoured, yoghurt pouch option.
- Woolworths No Added Sugar yoghurt pouches are a similar option in terms of price and nutrition in a slightly bigger pouch size (110g). For a flavoured yoghurt option in a family-size tub, Farmer’s Union Kids tubs are low in sugar, high in calcium.
