CR Chobani Kids Yoghurt Mixed Berry Pouch

Chobani Kids Mixed Berry Yoghurt Pouch | Chewsday Review

Today, I’m back in the fridge aisle looking at Chobani Kids Mixed Berry Yoghurt pouch. There seem to be more and more no added sugar, fruit-flavoured pouches squeezing into the supermarkets! Let’s see how this one compares against the rest.

Ingredients Ingredients
  • Skim Milk, Cream (Milk), Water, Strawberries (2%), Blackberries (2%), Blueberries (1%), Tapioca Flour, Natural Flavours, Citrus Fibre, Enzyme (Lactase), Milk Minerals, Vegetable Extract, Live Cultures (Milk). Live and Active Cultures, including Probiotics: S. thermophilus, L. bulgaricus, L. acidophilus, Bifidus and L. casei.
  • Lactase is a type of enzyme used to breakdown lactose (a sugar that is naturally found in milk), making the pouches lactose free.
  • Allergens: Milk
Positives Positives
  • The sugar content (3.3g per 100g) is well within healthy guidelines, and similar to the no added sugar Tamar Valley Dairy Kids (3.2g sugar per 100g) and Aldi Brooklea Kids pouches (3.9g sugar per 100g). Most flavoured yoghurts with added sugar have a sugar content between 6g to 16g per 100g.
  • Total fat (3.5g per 100g) and saturated fat (2.2g per 100g) meet recommendations. These pouches have half the amount of saturated fat per 100g than the no added sugar Tamar Valley Dairy Kids and Aldi Brooklea Kids pouches.
Negatives Negatives
  • A little disappointing to see the calcium content of this pouch (104mg per 100g) fall below our minimum calcium target of 120mg per 100g. Interestingly, most flavoured Chobani yoghurts fall short in calcium content (less than 120mg per 100g).
  • As with most yoghurt pouches, the Chobani Kids pouches come at a cost. At $18.50 per kg, they are cheaper than the Tamar Valley Kids No Sugar pouches ($21.80 per kg), although more expensive than most other no added sugar yoghurt pouches such as Woolworths No Added Sugar pouches ($12.30 per kg).
  • Yoghurt pouches can be a convenient option for an on-the-go snack, however regularly drinking and sucking from the pouches doesn’t help little ones develop their biting and chewing skills. Single-use plastic pouches also aren’t the best for the environment.

Marketing Marketing
  • No sugar or sweeteners added” – True, the sweetness comes from the added strawberries, blackberries, and blueberries, as well as the naturally occurring sugars found in milk.
  • “Authentically strained to be naturally thick and creamy” – Not strictly true! It contains tapioca flour and citrus fibre to thicken the yoghurt. Thickeners are nothing to be worried about, however there are many other plain, unflavored natural or Greek yoghurts in supermarkets that only contain milk, milk solids, cream, and cultures.
  • “Lactose free Greek yoghurt” – yes, lactase (a type of enzyme) has been added to break down the lactose sugar naturally found in milk, making it lactose free.
Alternatives Alternatives
  • Whilst it’s nice to see no added sugar, flavoured yoghurt options available, the Chobani Kids pouches are lower in calcium and pricier than other no added sugar yoghurt pouches.
  • Woolworths and Farmers Union No Added Sugar pouches are cheaper alternatives with a higher calcium content.
  • If you’re looking for a tub version to support biting and chewing skill development or to reduce your plastic footprint, these pouches are the same yoghurt as the Chobani No Sugar Added Greek Yoghurt tubs. That’s our only current tub of no added sugar yoghurt (albeit lower in calcium than I’d like) since Tamar Valley have discontinued theirs.
