CR Farmers Union No Added Sugar Yoghurt Pouch (2)

Farmers Union No Added Sugar Kids Yoghurt Pouch Blueberry | Chewsday Review

The ‘no added sugar yoghurt pouch’ category has been expanding rapidly, so let’s see where the latest high calcium yoghurt from Farmer’s Union squeezes in.

Ingredients Ingredients
  • Milk, milk solids, water, blueberry puree (4%), reconstituted apple juice, cream (milk), thickener (modified starch), natural flavours, mineral salt (calcium lactate), acidity regulator (sodium citrate), probiotic cultures (milk): B. lactis (BB-12), live yoghurt cultures (milk): S. thermophilus & L. bulgaricus.
  • While there is technically no added sugar in the ingredient list, apple juice is used to add sweetness.
  • Blueberry puree makes up only 4% of the yoghurt.
  • This yoghurt has added calcium and vitamin B12.
  • Allergens: milk
Positives Positives
  • Sugar content of 6.6g per 100g is within guidelines. This is comparable to Yoplait Petit Miam No Sugar Added Pouches (6.5g sugar per 100g), but higher than Tamar Valley Kids No Sugar Added Pouches (3.3g sugar per 100g). The Farmers Union and Yoplait pouches use apple juice or apple puree for sweetness.
  • Added calcium brings the calcium content of this yoghurt to 188mg per 100g, which is well above our target of 120mg per 100g. This is higher than Tamar Valley and Aldi Dairy Dream Kids No Sugar Added Pouches (143mg calcium per 100g), and Yoplait Petit Miam No Sugar Added Pouches (162mg per 100g).
  • Saturated fat meets recommendations (1.9g per 100g). This is similar to the Yoplait pouches, and less than half the saturated fat content of Tamar Valley or Aldi Dairy Dream (4.5g per 100g).
Negatives Negatives
  • Like other yoghurt pouches, these Farmers Union kids yoghurts don’t come cheap! At $2.20 each, they’re slightly better value than Tamar Valley due to the larger 130g pack size.
  • Yoghurt pouches don’t support development of biting and chewing skills or allow sensory exposure, and contribute to plastic waste.
  • Farmer’s Union have dropped the ‘h’ from their yoghurt. I’ve corrected it for them in this review 😜
Marketing Marketing
  • ‘The perfect on the go snack with no added sugar’. These are fine as a convenient option, but my preference is to choose yoghurt in a larger tub and serve with a bowl and spoon whenever possible. It’s tricky when we don’t have a good range of big, no added sugar tubs to choose from!
  • ‘High in Calcium’ and ‘30% of Your Daily Calcium’. A 130g pouch provides 244mg calcium, which is almost 50% of daily calcium needs for toddlers, and 35% for school aged kids.
Alternatives Alternatives
  • Overall, this is a good ‘no added sugar’ option for a flavoured yoghurt.
  • Farmers Union Kids Yoghurt Pouches would be a handy option if your child doesn’t consume a lot of high calcium foods. But if they regularly consume milk, cheese and yoghurt, then you could equally choose Brownes No Added Sugar, Woolworths No Added Sugar or Yoplait Petit Miam No Added Sugar yoghurt pouches. The pack size (ranging from 70g to 130g) is a key difference between these products.
  • If you’re looking to reduce single-use plastic, the Tamar Valley family tub works out a similar cost per 100g. It is higher in saturated fat that the products above.
