Eye spy another ‘no sugar added’ yoghurt pouch chilling in the supermarket, Yoplait Yop No Sugar Added Vanilla Yoghurt Pouches. Let’s see if these pouches are legen-dairy or a Yop flop.

Positives

The sugar content in this pouch is low at 4g per 100g. This is similar to Brownes Dairy Wiggles Yoghurt pouches (4.3g per 100g) and lower than Yoplait Petit Miam No Sugar pouches (6.6g per 100g). Apple juice has been added to this pouch and some flavours of the Brownes Dairy Wiggles and Yoplait Petit Miam pouches for sweetness.
Yoplait Yop No Sugar Added yoghurt pouches are high in calcium (213mg per 100g), well above our target of 120mg per 100g. This is higher than Farmer Union pouches (188mg per 100g), knocking it off the top spot for calcium content.
Total fat (2.3g per 100g) and saturated fat (1.5g per 100g) are within recommendations. Saturated fat is lower than Woolworths (2.6g per 100g) and Tamar Valleys (4.6g per 100g) No Added Sugar pouches.

Negatives

At $1.38 per 100g, these pouches sit at mid-range. No added sugar yoghurt pouches tend to range from $1.17 to $2.18 per 100g. Woolworths No Added Sugar yoghurt pouches are a similar and cheaper option ($1.23 per 100g).
Squeezie yoghurt pouches are convenient when on-the-go, however they don’t help kids develop their biting and chewing skills or allow sensory exposure. They also add to single-use plastics.

Marketing

“6 essential nutrients (calcium, vitamin B2 and B12, iodine, phosphorus and potassium).” – True, although these nutrients are naturally found in most yoghurts including plain, natural, or Greek yoghurt.
“Good source of calcium for healthy bones and teeth.” – There is well-established evidence to show that calcium is important for bone and teeth health. One 130g Yoplait Yop pouch provides 277mg of calcium, which is 55% of a toddler’s or 40% of a primary school-aged kid’s daily calcium needs.
“No artificial colours, flavours or preservatives” – most packaged products are free from artificial colours, flavours and preservatives these days, so this statement doesn’t mean much anymore.

Alternatives

Overall, this yoghurt pouch ticks a lot of boxes: no added sugar, high in calcium, meets our target for saturated fat and at a mid-range price point.
The high calcium content is handy for children who struggle to eat enough high calcium foods. However, if your child regularly eats milk, cheese, and yoghurt, then Woolworths No Added Sugar and Brownes Dairy Wiggles No Added Sugar yoghurt pouches are also decent options.
If you’re looking to reduce single-use plastics, Tamar Valley has a No Sugar Added Kids tub that is a similar cost per 100g. It is higher in saturated fat than the products above.
