- Free Range Chicken Breast (60%), Ciabatta Crumb Coating [Water, Wheat Flour, Thiamine, Folic Acid, Salt, Sugar, Yeast, Wheat Gluten, Dextrose, Canola Oil, Olive Oill, Canola Oil.
- Allergens: wheat, gluten.
- May contain: milk, soy.
- Sodium (salt) is 113g per 100g, which is low for a crumbed chicken product. It’s less than half the sodium content of Woolworths Original Chicken Breast Bites (250mg per 100g), and lower than Steggles Tempura Chicken Dino Snacks (310mg per 100g) or Aldi Farmwood Chicken Breast Chips (450mg per 100g).
- The chicken content of nuggets and tenders varies widely (anywhere from around 35 to 75%). so 60% is pretty decent.
- At 0.7g per 100g, saturated fat is well below my target. This is actually the case for most chicken nuggets on the market too.
- These do contain some added sugar in the crumb, bit it is a teeny amount (0.6g per 100g) and well within my recommendations.
- They’re chicken breast pieces rather than ground chicken, so could be a useful step between nuggets and home made schnitzels for kids still learning to like chicken.
- Like frozen nuggets, these are quick and easy to cook in the oven or air fryer.
- At $14 for a 400g pack ($35 per kg), these are expensive. They’re only slightly more than Woolworths Chicken Breast Bites ($30 per kg), but more than double the price of many nuggets ($10-15 per kg). Home made crumbed chicken will set you back around $13-14 per kg, but it’s obviously a lot less convenient (and messier!).
- These Mini Schnitties are only available at independent retailers.
- “These are not nuggets” and “Real chicken breast pieces”. True.
- The QR code on the pack links to a video showing how the mini schnitzels are made, giving a “just like at home” vibe. In reality, they would be produced on a much larger scale.
- Mt Barker Mini Schnitty tick the boxes for chicken content, salt, sugar and saturated fat, but they are a lot more expensive than regular chicken nuggets. I’d try these as a stepping stone towards home made crumbed chicken pieces.
- Woolworths Original Chicken Breast Bites are another option with higher chicken content (75%), but also slightly higher salt. You’ll find these ones in the freezer section though.
- If you’re feeling stuck in the chicken nugget stage, I’d love you to join my Mealtimes membership. There are lots of resources to help your child learn to like new foods, as well as support in our member Facebook group whenever you need it.
