The Natural Stock Co. Chicken Stock Concentrate | Chewsday Review

This week I'm reviewing Natural Stock Co. Chicken Stock Concentrate. Let's see if this stock concentrate is stock-standard or if we should all be stocking up.

Ingredients Ingredients
  • Vegetables (celery, carrot, onion, garlic, herbs) 55%, chicken 22%, WA lake salt, apple cider vinegar, spices.
  • Allergens: nil.
Positives Positives
  • At 211mg per 100ml, sodium is within guidelines. This is lower than liquid chicken stocks like Campbell’s Real Chicken Stock (447mg per 100ml) or Coles Real Chicken Stock (334mg per 100ml), but higher than the super low-sodium options like Maggie Beer Natural Chicken Stock (44mg per 100ml) or Campbell’s Real Chicken Stock Unsalted (10mg per 100ml).
  • Convenient and versatile! This stock can be added directly to dishes to add flavour, or to water to make liquid stock. I love that you can add as much or as little to suit your taste. Once opened, the jar can be kept in the fridge for up to a year. This means I’ve always got stock on hand and I have stopped throwing out half used cartons.
  • Great value. One jar makes 6.5L of liquid stock, which works out to $1.68 per litre. The price of liquid chicken stock ranges from $1.90 to $14 per litre.
  • The glass jar is recyclable and compact to store, unlike tetra packs or soft plastic packaging. That makes a huge difference to both my pantry space and the environment.
Negatives Negatives
  • This is genuinely one of my favourite products. The only downside is that it’s currently stocked at Coles, which is a separate trip from my main shop. I’d love to see it in more major and independent retailers!
Marketing Marketing
  • “Less waste – more taste!” True!
  • “Clean, pure, stock you can trust, with absolutely no nasties.” I wouldn’t call other stocks dirty or nasty. Classic “clean food” marketing.
  • “No sugar, fillers (like cornflour, rice flour, tapioca or cornstarch), artificial colours, flavours or preservatives.” True.
  • “Gluten and dairy free.” Yep, these are regulated claims.
  • “Plastic free, 100% recyclable packaging.” The glass jar is a win for me.
  • “Keto and Paleo friendly.” Not my vibe, but it does tick these boxes.
  • “100% Australian made and owned in Fremantle, WA. Low food miles. Made with 98% Australian ingredients”. Love this.
Alternatives Alternatives
  • The Natural Stock Co. Chicken Stock Concentrate is a staple in my household – it’s convenient, versatile, great value and has recyclable packaging.
  • Home made stock is always a great option if it’s something you have the time and inclination to make, but this stock concentrate is a winner for me.
