- Apple Blueberry Fruit Filling (33%) (10% Concentrated Apple Puree, Humectant (Glycerol), Glucose, Dextrin (from Wheat), Sugar, Concentrated Blueberry Puree (2%), Natural Flavouring), Wheat Flour, Vegetable Oils (Rapeseed, Palm, Coconut), Sugar, Invert Sugar Syrup, Fructo-Oligosaccharides, Humectant (Glycerol), Wheat Starch, Wheat Bran, Barn Egg, Citrus Fiber, Wheat Germ, Salt, Emulsifier (Rapeseed Lecithin), Thickener (Xanthan Gum), Raising Agent (Sodium Bicarbonate), Skimmed Milk Powder, Acid (Citric Acid), Natural Flavouring.
- The apple blueberry “filling” makes up one third of these bars, but this filling isn’t all fruit. There are several types of added sugar in the fruit filling as well as the bar, so I’m expecting the overall sugar content of this product to be pretty high.
- Allergens: Contains: Egg, Wheat, Milk, Gluten
- May contain: Peanuts, Cereals, Almonds, Hazelnuts, Other Cereals
- Sodium (salt) content is below guidelines at 110mg per 100g, and I would expect this to be the case with a sweet snack.
- Although saturated fat content meets our target (1.7g per 100g), total fat content (11.3g per 100g) is slightly above guidelines (11.3g per 100g) due to the addition of rapeseed, coconut and (sustainable) palm oil.
- At $4.80 for a 12 pack (40 cents per bar), Woolworths Fruit Filled Bars are some of the cheaper snack options on the market. They come in at less than half the price of Carman’s Muesli Bars, but in this case I don’t think you get what you pay for in terms of nutrition.
- The sugar content of 28.1g per 100g exceeds recommendations by almost double. And while some sugar comes from the fruit (which makes up 12% of the bar), there’s more added sugar than fruit.
- At 1.4g of fibre per bar, this snack bar does not meet our fibre target, and is lower in fibre than Carman’s Choc Brownie Aussie Oat Bars (4.4g fibre per 100g) and Uncle Toby’s Chewy Apricot Muesli Bars (3.6g per 100g).
- “These delicious Apple & Blueberry flavoured Fruit Filled Bars make a convenient snack that you can enjoy at any time of the day.” Convenient yes, but so is any packaged snack. Using “fruit filled” is a bit misleading in my mind, when there’s only 4.4g of fruit in a bar.
- I wouldn’t recommend Woolworths Fruit Filled Bars due to their high added sugar and low fibre content. But also, I haven’t been able to find a similar fruit filled bar on the market which meet my criteria. We had these recently in our house thanks to visiting relatives, and they’re well-liked by my 6 year old. I’m happy for her to eat what we have, but I personally would buy a muesli bar in preference to these in the future.
- If you’re looking for a convenient sweet bar for a snack, Carman’s muesli bars are my top pick.
