Carman’s Brownie with Choc Aussie Oat Bars | Chewsday Review

Pretty packaging, chocolate brownie flavour and the goodness of Australian oats! But is it all too good to be true? Let’s take a look into one of the offerings from Carman’s - a muesli bar masquerading as a chocolate brownie. Today’s Chewsday Review features Carman’s Brownie with Choc Aussie Oat bars.

Ingredients

Whole Grain Oats 47%, Glucose, Chicory Fibre, Puffed Rice (Rice Flour, Rice Bran), Dark Choc Compound 6% (Vegetable Oil, Sugar, Milk Protein, Cocoa Powder, Emulsifier [Soy Lecithin, Sunflower Lecithin], Natural Flavour), Invert Sugar, Sunflower Oil, Cocoa Powder, Linseeds, Condensed Milk, Humectant (Glycerin [Plant Derived]), Stabliser (Acacia Gum), Natural Flavour.
Chicory fibre helps bump up the fibre to 4.4g per bar.
Allergens: wheat, gluten, milk, soy.
May contain: barley, rye, peanut, tree nuts, sesame, lupin.

Positives

These are a good source of fibre, containing 4.4g per bar, which is slightly more than Aldi’s choc chip muesli bars (4g each) and Uncle Tobys choc chip muesli bars (3.5g each).
Only 11.3g of sugar per 100g and 3.4g per bar. That comes to less than a teaspoon per muesli bar. It’s fairly similar to other Carman’s muesli bars, but much less than other chocolate flavoured bars, like Milo Snack bars and Uncle Tobys Choc Chip Oat slice.
As expected, these are low in sodium.

Negatives

This product is slightly on the higher side for fat, with 11.4g per 100g total fat and 3.6g of saturated fat per 100g. This is from the vegetable oil (in the dark chocolate topping) and the sunflower oil. This is pretty similar to Uncle Tobys Choc Chip Chewy muesli bars (4.2g per 100g), but less than Aldi’s Chewy Choc Chip bars (5.3g per 100g).
These will cost you a pretty penny! At $5.90 for 6 bars, these come in at 98c per bar. This might be something to consider before you decide to buy these regularly!

I like that these have a decent amount of fibre in them and aren’t super high in added sugar for a chocolate muesli bar.
If you’re looking for a cheaper option but still want the chocolate flavour, Aldi’s Chewy Choc Chip Muesli Bars are an option (although they are a little higher in saturated and total fat).
And just in case you are still confused, this is far closer to a muesli bar than a brownie!
