Arnott's Bluey Muesli Bars (1)

Arnott’s Bluey Muesli Bars Yoghurt & Fancy Fruit | Chewsday Review

Bluey muesli bars! For real life?! Let’s see if these are just marketing or worth the dollar bucks.

Ingredients Ingredients
  • Whole Grains (51%) [Oats, Barley] Glucose, Chicory Fibre, Yoghurt Compound (6%) (Sugar, Vegetable Fat, Milk Solids, Yoghurt Powder (Contains Milk), Emulsifier (Soy Lecithin), Citric Acid), Flavoured Fruit Pieces (4.5%) [Strawberry, Blueberry (Contains Wheat), Diced Apple (Preservative (220) (Sulphites)], Rice Crisps, Sunflower Oil, Honey, Shredded Coconut (2.5%), Humectant (Glycerine), Oat Fibre, Natural Flavours, Raw Sugar, Blackcurrant Juice Concentrate, Salt, Beetroot Powder.
  • The wholegrain content of around 50% is fairly standard for a muesli bar.
  • The featured ingredients of yoghurt and ‘fancy fruit’ account for just over 10% of the product.
  • Raw sugar, blackcurrant juice concentrate and honey are all types of added sugar.
  • Allergens: gluten, wheat, soy, milk, sulphites
  • May contain: peanut, almond, brazil nut, cashew, hazelnut, macadamia, pecan, pine nut, pistachio, walnut, sesame, lupin. These precautionary allergen statements can voluntarily be used by food manufacturers to declare cross contamination risk.
Positives Positives
  • Sugar content of 13.3g per 100g is within healthy guidelines. The sugar in this muesli bar comes from both added sugar and fruit, and at 4g per bar is comparable to Carman’s muesli bars.
  • With 4.2g of fibre per serving, these muesli bars pack a fibre punch thanks to the oats, barley and added oat fibre. One bar provides 30% of a toddler’s and almost 25% of a child’s daily fibre requirement. Wackadoo!
  • Low in sodium, as expected for a muesli bar.
Negatives Negatives
  • Total and saturated fat content (4.4g per 100g) are above healthy guidelines, coming mostly from vegetable fat, added oils and milk solids. Uncle Toby’s Chewy Apricot Muesli Bars have a lower saturated fat content of 1.9g per 100g.
  • Bluey doesn’t come cheap! These muesli bars work out to $1 each, which is similar price-wise to Carman’s, but double the cost of Uncle Toby’s.
  • The ‘yoghurt’ is made from mostly sugar and fat, without any of the nutritional benefits of actual yoghurt.
Marketing Marketing
  • “Good source of fibre, lunchbox friendly and Australian made”. True, although there are plenty of other great lunchbox options without the price tag. These muesli bars are made in Australia, but only from 60% Australian ingredients.
  • “Our Bluey Muesli Bars have a 4 Health Star Rating, making them a healthier snack that kiddos will love”. These muesli bars do compare well to some other sweet snack bars, like LCMs, which is reflected in the 4 health star rating. While this product is a reasonable choice, be mindful that food marketed to kids doesn’t always (or often) equal nutritious food.
Alternatives Alternatives
  • Overall, these muesli bars meet fibre and added sugar targets, but I’m not as impressed by the price and saturated fat content.
  • For a similar flavour, but lower price point I’d recommend Uncle Toby’s Yoghurt and Strawberry Muesli Bars. Alternatively, Carman’s Berries & Yoghurt Aussie Oat Bars are comparable in price, but have less saturated fat.
