CR Farmers Union Greek Style Kids Yoghurt Mixed Berry

Farmers Union No Added Sugar Kids Yoghurt Mixed Berry | Chewsday Review

A brand new tub of no added sugar yoghurt has hit the shelves and it’s udderly packed with promises! Time to see if this tub lives up to the buzz or if it’s just milking it.

Ingredients Ingredients
  • Milk, Milk Solids, Water, Mixed Berries (4.0%) (Strawberry Puree, Blueberry Puree, Blackberry Puree), Reconstituted Apple Juice, Cream (Milk), Thickener (1442), Mineral Salt (Calcium Lactate), Natural Flavours, Probiotic Cultures (Milk): (B. Lactis (Bb-12(R)), Live Yogurt Cultures (Milk): (S. Thermophilus & L. Bulgaricus).
  • Mixed berries make up only 4% of this yoghurt – that’s just 5g of fruit per serve.
  • Allergens: Milk.
Positives Positives
  • It’s great to find a new no added sugar fruit yoghurt in a tub! This one meets guidelines, containing 6.1g of sugar per 100g. Most of this is naturally occurring from the lactose in the milk and the fruit puree. There is some sneaky reconstituted apple juice added though, which adds extra sweetness.
  • High in calcium! At 188mg per 100g, this yoghurt is exceeding our target thanks to the added calcium. This is nearly double the amount of calcium in Chobani No Sugar Added Greek Strawberry Yoghurt (97mg per 100g).
  • Sodium and saturated fat are within recommendations, as with most dairy yoghurts.
Negatives Negatives
  • The very small amount of fruit in this yoghurt is mainly for marketing purposes only. With 5g of fruit per serve, this works out to be less than half a small strawberry, 1 blueberry and 1 blackberry.
  • Interestingly, the 4-pack of 150g Farmer’s Union tubs are cheaper ($10/kg) than the 500g tub ($11.80 per kg). The tub is definitely more affordable than the pouches, but there are cheaper tub alternatives like the Chobani No Sugar Added Greek Strawberry Yoghurt at $10 per kg (less than ideal calcium), or Yoplait Strawberry Yoghurt at $4.90 per kg (some added sugar).
Marketing Marketing
  • “High in calcium” and “30% of your daily calcium” – a serving of this yoghurt will provide about 38% of your toddler’s daily calcium needs.
  • “No added sugar” and “sweetened with fruit” – true, although it is also sweetened with some reconstituted apple juice too.
  • Includes probiotics, vitamin B12 and iodine – this checks out. There are live cultures in this yoghurt, and vitamin B12 and iodine are naturally occurring in cow’s milk.
Alternatives Alternatives
  • It was a sad day when we lost the Tamar Valley tubs, but overall, this Farmer’s Union yoghurt is a great ‘no added sugar’ option in a tub. It provides a big boost of calcium, with significantly more than Chobani No Sugar Added Greek Yoghurt.
